About ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Preventive Care Coverage

Preventive Care 101

Are you looking for pet health insurance that covers preventive care? Or maybe you’re wondering what this coverage is and why you might need it? Preventive care coverage gives you cash back for routine services that help keep your pet healthy. It can be added to your plan for as little as $9.95 per month.

What is preventive care?

Things like vaccines, flea and tick medication, heartworm preventative, and dental cleanings can help keep your pet from getting sick. Other services like wellness exams and screenings give your veterinarian the opportunity to detect health issues in the early stages, which can mean a better outcome for your pet. Wellness exams also allow your veterinarian to help keep your pet’s weight on track. Pets who are overweight or obese are more at risk for health problems, such as joint pain or kidney disease.

Those routine exams can be especially important for cats, since they tend to hide or mask their symptoms when they’re sick or injured. You might miss the signs that something is wrong with your cat if you didn’t take them to the veterinarian on a regular basis.

Why consider this coverage?

If you’re already paying for your pet’s preventive care, why not get cash back for it? If you haven’t been staying on top of it, this coverage can prompt you to make those appointments so you can get your reimbursements.

How does it work?

You can choose one of our preventive care coverage options. Each one has a list of covered services and each service has a set maximum annual benefit amount. There’s no deductible or co-insurance amount. These benefits are available as soon as your plan is effective, so you can sign up today and have this coverage tomorrow.

Here’s an example of how it works. Let’s say you take your pet to the veterinarian for a wellness exam, which has a set annual maximum reimbursement amount of $50. After your pet’s appointment, you would:

How do I submit a claim for preventive care services?

Although preventive care coverage works differently than our accident and illness coverage, you can use the same easy process to submit those claims. The fastest way to get us your claims is to download the My Pet Insurance app. All you need to do is open the app, tell us the services your pet received, and snap a photo of your invoice. You can also track claims, pay your bill, find nearby veterinary clinics, and more with the app.

If you prefer, you can email, fax, or mail us your claim—whatever works best for you. Once we get your claim, we’ll process it as quickly as possible. If you signed up for direct deposit, we’ll put your money right into your bank account. Otherwise, you’ll receive a check in the mail for your reimbursement amount.

Do all pet insurance providers offer this coverage?

You may be surprised to know that not all pet insurance providers have preventive care coverage. This is something you should think about when you’re shopping around for a plan. Even if you’re not sure you want this coverage when you enroll, you may want to go with a provider who offers it. Otherwise, you might not be able to add it to your plan if you change your mind in the future.

How is it different from Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans®?

You may have come across Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans® in your research on pet insurance. It’s important to know that these wellness plans are not the same thing as pet insurance. When you purchase a wellness plan, you are essentially prepaying for the preventive care services your pet may need. You won’t have coverage for accidents, illnesses, hereditary conditions, or behavioral issues like you would with Complete CoverageSM.

You’re also limited to using Banfield Pet Hospitals with their wellness plans. Complete CoverageSM gives you the freedom to visit any veterinarian or specialist with your pet.
